A Japanese VIP, Ms Megumi OIWA, recently visited Phoenix Academy. Megumi holds a very special place in Phoenix’s heart, as she was the very first student that ever enrolled in a Phoenix course.
Robynne Walsh met Megumi quite by chance on a busy street in Tokyo in late 1998 as Megumi offered to help Robynne negotiate her way to Shinjuku to visit the Australian Embassy. This chance encounter resulted in Megumi and her husband Kazuhiro deciding that they wanted to quit their jobs in Tokyo and follow Robynne back to Perth just 6 weeks later.
Megumi and Kaz arrived on a Monday in late January 1989 and were the very first students to sit in a Phoenix classroom. For the first 4 weeks it was just Robynne, Megumi and Kaz in the whole school. When Montri, a Thai student, arrived making the full enrolment 3 students Megumi and Kaz were a bit jealous that Robynne had to now teach three in the class instead of just two. When remembering this everyone had a good laugh to think how lucky they were to have such a small class size.
Megumi and Kaz became very close to Robynne and Brian and spent a lot of time with the Walsh family. They especially loved being with Robynne and Brian’s children Rebecca and Tim who were only 8 and 9 at the time. Many years have passed and Rebecca is 32 and Tim is almost 31 so it has been a great opportunity for the whole family to catch up and compare stories and news. During her visit Megumi also met with Kate Tarrant one of her original teachers who is still at Phoenix.

Phoenix staff and students celebrated Thai Songkran with a traditional water blessing and performance by a group of visiting Thai teachers and an exciting all- campus water fight. Students and teachers embraced the Songkran tradition of throwing water and used toy water pistols and water balloons to wet each other. It was a fantastic afternoon of fun and laughter, to enjoy some photos please visit this link: CLICK HERE.
Songkran is the traditional New Year in Thailand, when Thai people visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends, neighbours and may also go to the temple to pray and give food to monks. They believe doing this will bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year.
